New books

  1. CSI Miami: Heat wave
  2. Doctor Who: The Slitheen Excrusion
  3. Stargate Atlantis: Dead end.

6 new books in June 2010.

Doctor Who: Autonomy

In the opening episode of the 9th Doctor era, the Doctor & Rose defeat the Nestene Consciousness, who was trying to take over earth using plastic mannequins as it's army and the Eye of London as a transmitter dish. In this book the Nestenes are back trying again to take over earth using a huge mall as their launching pad. Now it's the 10th Doctor who defeats them. Again I wasn't able to put the book down. Reading these books is like watching new episodes.

Buffy: The wisdom of war

It took me over a week to finish reading this book, but it was worth the effort. The book is less about Buffy & the scooby gang and more about the difference between Buffy, the council of Watchers and the order of the sage. The order is a bunch of bleeding hearts lefties who like a certain president believe that by parleying they'll be able to change Evil into peacenikness. On the other hand, the council has only 1 solution to everything - killing. Buffy was the only one who was ready to stop and look at the broader picture. She was also the one who realised that the sea serpents are the bad guys in the story.

G.I. JOE: Reborn

Because of the name G.I. JOE, I always assumed that this comics are all about war. When IDW got the license Danny from my local comics shop asked me if I'll start reading it, naturally my answer was no. I have enough war in the real world and don't want it in my comics. Boy was I wrong !!!
I found this book in the bargain bin and decided to give it a try because from glancing inside it looked like there was more to G.I. JOE then just war actions. I was right. G.I. JOE is about Cobra - a megalomaniac used cars salesman who decided to take over the world because he was forced to pay taxes and obey the law. Against him stand the G.I. JOE unit - a group of people who were ready to give up their identities and military careers in order to fight Cobra so their children will not have to salute the Cobra insignia.
I enjoyed the read. The art is good till you get to the male characters. It's a but hard to see who is who in the male part of the G.I. JOE unit because they all look the same. I'm looking forward to get my hands on more G.I. JOE books.

Charmed #0 - source book

Creating a source book before issue #1 is a wonderful idea. It's been several years since the last episode was aired. This issue contains reminders of who is who in the charmed universe and and a very short summery of each season. The preview of issue #1 is also very appetizing :)

Star Trek: The ashes of Eden

A great find from the bargain bin. The story is about Jim Kirk's sort of middle life crisis. I just love the Reeves- Stevens's writing. The art is wonderful. The likenesses are almost uncanny considering it's a real drawing and not a photoshop magic.

Sherlock Holmes: The Baker Street Irregulars

Sherlock Holmes: The Baker Street Irregulars graphical series by Tony Lee and Dan Boultwood to be released by Franklin Watts Books in Spring 2011.

Sherlock Holmes is dead – and the streets of London are awash with crime. And with no great detective to save them – who will the common people of London turn to? these four books chronicle the adventures of the Baker Street Irregulars, characters mentioned in Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes books ‘A Study In Scarlet’ and ‘The Sign Of Four’ as they take up the challenge of defending the Victorian city against the forces of evil; facing kidnappers, thieves, murderers and a criminal mastermind believed to be the notorious Moriarty, the man also believed to have killed Sherlock Holmes at the Reichenbach Falls several months earlier. But the Irregulars aren’t alone – helping them are the reluctant Inspector Lestrade, the mysterious débutante Irene Adler and the steadfast Doctor John Watson, who uses his years of study under Holmes to assist this new generation of crime-solvers. Set in the three ‘missing years’ between ‘The Adventure Of The Final Problem’ and ‘The Adventure Of The The Empty House’, the series concentrates on Wiggins, the only Baker Street Irregular named in any of Sir Arthur Conan-Doyles books, and his gang of detectives, including the female pickpocket ‘Pockets’, the chimney sweep apprentice ‘Ash’, the Chinatown inventor ‘Chen’ and the butcher’s assistant ‘Tiny’. Alongside the Irish Wolfhound ‘Fluffy’ and their mysterious first client ‘Eliza’, they find themselves in a variety of adventures that fans of the genre of any age can enjoy.

With four stories, ‘The Adventure Of The Missing Detective’, ‘The Adventure Of The Phantom Of Drury Lane’, ‘The Adventure Of The Charge Of The Old Brigade’ and ‘The Adventure Of The Family Reunion’ released in March 2011, Sherlock Holmes: The Baker Street Irregulars is a series for both reluctant and confident readers of all ages.

I love Tony Lee's writing and of course anything to do with Sherlock Holmes, so when the time comes I'll add this series to my ever growing reading list :)

Star Trek: The motion picture trilogy

This collection contains the adaptations of the Star Trek movies 2-4. The adaptions of movies 3+4 was made in the 90s while movie 2 was adopted last year. The difference is huge and show how much for the better the comics art evolved in the last 15 or so years. What bothered me in the adaptation of movie 2 is that the graphics looks like screencaps that were photoshoped to look like drawings.

The re-mastering and re-printing of the older adaptations is great. Thank you IDW for doing it.

Blood debt

Blood Ties was one of my favorite TV shows and I was very sorry that it was canceled. I didn't enjoyed the 1st 2 Blood books because I still remembered the plot from the show. But reading this book was pure joy. It's the 5th book in the series and I don't own yet books 3-4 so I didn't know about Vicky becoming a vampire but it didn't matter. The book is just great and I was happy that Henry & Vicky discovered that they can be close even as vampires .

It will be great if there will be Blood Ties comics :)

New stuff

  1. Doctor Who classics s3 #4
  2. The murder of king Tut #1
  3. Star Trek: McCoy #3
  4. Star Trek: The ashes of Eden

4 new items so far in June 2010.

New TV season for Torchwood

WOOHOO there is going to be a 4th season for Torchwood. It will be 10 episodes long and will feature the return of John Barrowman and Jack Harkness, Eve Myles as Gwen Cooper, and Russell T. Davies as showrunner.

Only 10 episodes isn't enough but beggars can't be choosers :)

Spike comics news from Ryall

After a very long wait since the initial announcement a year ago there some new about the SPIKE ongoing series from Lynch and Urru. The series launches in October and takes Spike from LA to Vegas, from hanging with Illyria and Angel to re-uniting with people like Beck, Betta George, and Tok.

Crossing fingers that there will be less dragons and other monsters and more story telling.

The secrets of the immortal Nicholas Flamel: The sorceress

The 3rd book in the Nicholas Flamel series is as good as the first 2. Josh is still wary of Alchemist but after he was awakened in book 2, he isn't jealous anymore of his twin Sophie. We meet the immortals Shakespeare and Billy the kid and visit Stonehenge. I prefer Percy Jackson's Olympians over the Elders some of whom are none other the Titans.

Dynamite acquires Total Recall

Dynamite has announced plans to publish Total Recall comic books, based on the Carolco Pictures film released in 1990. The film starred Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sharon Stone. I loved the movie and am looking forward to the comics.
