New comics

  1. G.I Joe: Hearts & minds #1
  2. Robocop #6

13 new comics in August 2010.

G.I. Joe ongoing vol. 2

WOW !!! The 2nd volume of the ongoing series which collects issues #7-12 is as great as the 1st one. General Hawk had to eat his hat and admit that Cobra is a real threat and that Scarlet isn't a traitor. Snake Eyes find his match and almost get himself killed. And Destro is still trying to invent the matter transporter. Thanks god that Scotty isn't around to help him and Cobra.
The difference between the new IDW continuity and the old comics is that while in the old comics the JOEs were founded as an answer to Cobra's threat, in the new comics the JOEs were founded long before anyone was aware of Cobra. But who cares. I love reading both continuities.
The story is very exiting and full of action. The art is just wonderful !!! Looking forward to vol. 3 which I'm planning to buy only in October in accordance with my 1 TPB per month resolution. Next month's TPB will be Operation Hiss from the movie continuity.

  1. CSI: Sin city

Star Trek Voyager: The farther shore

This is the sequel of Homecoming. Voyager's senior stuff with the help of Data, Dr. Kaz and Harry Kim's girlfriend manage to stop Admiral Covington who made herself into a Borg queen, to assimilate Earth. The irony is that during the Destiny books, Janeway herself will be assimilated and turned into a Borg queen. I'm glad that I've decided to start reading the Voyager books from after the TV series.

Is Angel comics going back to Dark Horse ???

An announcement in Dark Horse's Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Riley one-shot has fans wondering, and worrying, about the future of IDW Publishing's Angel series. In a column at the end of the issue, in stores today, Dark Horse Senior Managing Editor Scott Allie teased "the return of the Angel series to Dark Horse in late 2011, in tandem with our Buffy Season 9 relaunch".

Chris Ryall, posted on IDW's forum earlier today, telling concerned Angel readers that, "We'll be addressing this soon, so please bear with us. Thanks, for your patience and your support."

Update: Both IDW & Dark Horse confirmed that Angel comics are moving back to Dark Horse. I'm not that thrilled by the move. On one hand the issues will probably be less expensive and maybe there will be less monsters. But on the other hand, DH's paper quality is not great and they tend to stick full page ads om every other page :(

Star Trek Voyager: Homecoming

I've finally realized why suddenly reading Star Trek novels is problematic for me. In the past each novel was a stand alone. You can pick up any book and read it without feeling that you are missing crucial background. But in the last several years, all the books are part of an evolving universe that started to evolve from where it was left by the 10th movie (Nemesis) and the end of the Voyager series. So the only way to read them is in order of appearance. I'm going to make a list which will enable me to read then in the correct order.
This book is about the 1st adventure of the Voyager's crew starting with their returning home from the Delta quadrant. They have the misfortune of coming home right after the Dominion war and find themselves being accused of plugging Earth with a Borg virus that turn humans into Borg drones. Near the end of the book I've figured out that the head of Starfleet's cover ops is behind that virus. This is the 1st of 2 books, with The Farther Shore being the sequel. Luckily I've it too and already started reading it.

Dresden files: Proven guilty

The 8th Dresden files book is as wonderful as the previous 7 books. Jim Butcher manage to keep the suspense and interest going. When Mouse growled at Molly Carpenter I was sure that she is the one doing black magic. The book ends with a cliff hanger - which one of the senior White consulars is the traitor helping the Red court vampires.
I've just checked Jim Butcher's web page and found out that the 13th Harry Dresden book - Ghost Story, is due out March 29th, 2011. Also, Side Jobs, a compilation of Dresden Files short stories is slated for October 26th. I'm a very happy Harry Dresden fan :)

G.I. Joe: Snake eyes

This graphic novel is categorized as a G.I. Joe movie related book. I haven't seen the movie and still didn't read the comic adaptation of it. But all the above didn't matter when it comes to enjoying this book. The story is a glimpse into Snake eyes background and history as a western boy raised in Japan. A very good read. I'm very happy that I've decided to add G.I. Joe to my reading list :)

CSI Miami: Heat wave

A very suspenseful book. Somewhere in the middle I started suspecting that the one behind the gangs war and murders was the DEA whose wife was one of the victims who turned vigilantly. I never suspected that it was him and his ex-partner turned drug lords. I need to get my hands on more CSI books. Too bad that they are impossible to find in my neck of the woods. Thanks god for Amazon.

GI Joe: Helix

Got this oneshot only today and already read it. The story is good but way too short. Duke was sent to find a missing Joe operative - Helix. On the next page he already stumble upon someone who point him to the hotel where Helix was staying with the Cobra Japanese bad guy she was sent to spy on. 2 pages later Duke and Helix save the Tokyo stock exchange from a bomb and capture said Cobra operative. End of story. As I said, way tooo short. The art isn't as good as in vol. 1 of the ongoing series.

New comics

  1. Doctor Who classics S3 #6
  2. G.I. Joe: Helix
  3. G.I. Joe: Snake eyes
3 new comics so far in August 2010

Dctor Who: apollo 23

This is the 1st book of the 11th Doctor's adventures that I read and it's quite fascinating. It's not the story which is the usual "the Doctor saving earth from yet another alien invasion", but the way the Doctor is portrayed.

I've already watched the whole 1st season of the 11th Doctor and although I enjoyed it due to good stories, the jury is still out re Matt Smith's portrayal of the Doctor. He is as jumpy as David Tenant's Doctor and speak as quickly as Tenant, but the Tenant's fire is missing. Smith's Doctor is kind of a faded copy of Tenant's Doctor. When Tenant's Doctor was angry, I wanted to be as far away from him as possible. Smith's Doctor doesn't have this effect.

In this book although it's supposed to be the 11th Dcotor adventure, the Doctor cones across as the 10th Doctor and not the 11th. The above mentioned fire is there, which makes me very happy :)
