The Vampire Diaries books are very different from the TV show. Elena, Stefan, Damon, Bonie, Caroline & Alaric are in both but the stories are totaly different. The Struggle is the 2nd book in the series. It ends with Elena being turned into a vampire. The TV show is going in a different direction. At least the part of the 1st season I watched so far.
