Dresden Files: Turn coat

The search for a traitor in the highest circles of power forms the main plot thread of Butcher's 11th hard-boiled fantasy novel featuring Chicago's wizard detective Harry Dresden. Harry, a warden of the magic-governing White Council, finds himself in an unusual position when Morgan, his fellow warden and frequent antagonist, asks for his help. One of the White Council's leaders has been murdered, and Morgan was found at the scene of the crime holding the murder weapon. If he has been framed, then another senior wizard is behind the killing and may be trying to destroy the council entirely. Aided by werewolf and vampire allies, Dresden investigates .

The 11th Dresden Files books is as unputdownable as the previous 10 books and a prime candidate for the WOW list. The usual Harry save the day plot is is only a small part of the big story of Harry v. the Black Council. At the end the book Harry finally is not alone in his belief that such group exist. His old mentor Wizard Mccoy is on his side. (Crossing fingers that at the end McCoy will not be revealed as one of the black wizards. On the other hand it seems that Harry lost his vampire half brother Thomas to the White Court. But from Thomas grinning when Harry used magic to jam Thomas's bodyguard's radio I suspect that Thomas was only putting up an act and that he didn't really change. Looking forward to reading book 12 and getting book 13 :)

Doctor Who: Wishing well

The old village well is just a curiosity - something to attract tourists intrigued by stories of lost treasure, or visitors just making a wish. Unless something alien and terrifying could be lurking inside the well. Something utterly monstrous that causes nothing but death and destruction! But who knows the real truth about the well? Who wishes to unleash the hideous force it contains? What terrible consequences will follow the search for a legendary treasure hidden at the bottom? No one wants to believe the Doctor's warnings about the deadly horror lying in wait - but soon they'll wish they had...

A standard Doctor Who tale. A monster is hiding beneath a peaceful English village and the Doctor just happen to be there in time to save the day. All this is spiced with some greed and drama. Never the less I loved every minute of reading it and couldn't put it down.

Young Bond: By royal command

In a world on the brink of war, James Bond must take on some of the most merciless villains ever known.James’s every move is being watched. He holds the clue to a sinister plot that will bring bloodshed and carnage to his school…and his country. Forced to flee from Eton to Austria, James must leave behind everything he knows, with only a beautiful - and dangerous - girl by his side. Soon he is trapped in a deadly war of secrets and lies, as a nightmare reunion with a bitter enemy throws him once more into the path of death. With nowhere to run and no one to trust, James alone will have to uncover the truth behind an evil plot before all is lost.

As it is evident in this blog, I love reading young adult books (Harry Potter & Percy Jackson for example), but the Young Bond series is more then a bit overboard. No strech of imagination can get me to believe that a teenage James Bond can single handedly take on Soviet and Nazi bad guys. I'm seriously considering putting the 3 books from this series I own in the "for sale" pile.

Throne of Fire - Rick Riordan

Ever since the gods of Ancient Egypt were unleashed on the modern world, Carter Kane and his sister, Sadie, have been in big trouble. As descendants of the magical House of Life, they command certain powers. But now a terrifying enemy ? Apophis, the giant snake of chaos ? is rising. If Carter and Sadie don?t destroy him, the world will end in five days? time. And in order to battle the forces of chaos, they must revive the sun god Ra ? a feat no magician has ever achieved. Because first they must search the world for the three sections of the Book of Ra, then they have to learn how to chant its spells . . . Can the Kanes destroy Apophis before he swallows the sun and plunges the earth into darkness . . . forever?

The 2nd book in the Kane Chronicles series is as exiting as the 1st one (The red pyramid). That is if you can ignore the fact that those fighting the Gods and mature magicians are 15 & 13 years old kids. This is no differnet then 12 years old Harry Potter fighting Voldemort in the 1st Harry Potter book.

Through these books I'm widening my knowledge of Egyptian mythology. Knowledge that started while watching Stargate LOL.

Cross Bones - Kathy Reichs

Forensic anthropologist Tempe Brennan spends more time contemplating biblical history than modern-day murder. A preface sets the stage, providing a bit of factual context for the puzzle that emerges when Tempe is given a photo of an articulated skeleton, which she is told is the key to the suspicious death of a slightly shady Orthodox Jewish merchant. The legend on the back of a photo leads to the bones themselves, 2,000-year-old remains that excite not only Tempe but also her friend Jake Drum, a biblical archaeologist, who suggests that the bones might even belong to Jesus himself!

A very enjoyable book. I usually complain about all the French sentences in Reichs's books, but in this book no such complaint. This time the forein language is Hebrew which happens to be my language :) Just a note of caustion to those now reading the book - all the descriptions of Israel as a place where a terror attack can happen every day was true to the time when the book was 1st published. Now 6 years later. Israel is safe and quite.

Human target: Chance meetings

Christopher Chance has made a living off of making himself a human target. A master of disguise, he cunningly takes on the appearance and persona of men and women with contracts out against them. But when a routine assignment to impersonate an African-American minister with a bounty on his head goes south, Chance is soon caught between a lethal assassin and a vicious gang war. As this psychological thriller takes the reader through a roller coaster of unexpected twists and turns, it is soon...In the psychological thriller HUMAN TARGET: FINAL CUT, Christopher Chance, a unique bodyguard that assumes the identity of the person that he is protecting, finds himself caught in a tangled web of Hollywood deceit, drugs and duplicity. While posing as an elderly film actor, the Human Target successfully takes down and kills the man who has been extorting aging thespians. But when Chance learns that the extortionist has also kidnapped a child actor, the master of disguise must impersonate his father.

I love the TV show and am very disappointed that Fox canceled it after only 2 seasons. That's why I got this graphic novel. It came very recommended and the guys at my local shop described it as a very smart story. Well, I have to disagree. This is the most confusing book I ever read. Esp. the 1st part titled "chance meetings". During the whole story I wasn't able to tell who is who. If the charecter in the panel is actually Chance, or Tom or Earl. The 2nd part titled "Final cut" is a bit better. At least most of the time I knew who is who. Still there was too much soul searching. I prefer Chance as he is portrayed in the TV show and the other characters there over the unstable Chance & Tom of the comics.

MARVEL TO PUBLISH CASTLE GRAPHIC NOVEL

Marvel Entertainment and ABC Studios have announced Castle: Richard Castle's Deadly Storm, a hardcover graphic novel inspired by the ABC's Castle television series. The graphic novel will feature the adventures of Derrick Storm from writers Brian Michael Bendis and Kelly Sue DeConnick and artist Lan Medina.

I've never heard of Richard Castle and his books and of the TV show. But it's another thing to consider. Marvel does great job with adopting the Anita Blake and Ender's Game books.

Stargate Atlantis: Death game

Colonel John Sheppard wakes up on an alien world in the wreckage of a Puddle Jumper - and can't remember how he got there. Putting the pieces together, he discovers his team is scattered across a tropical archipelago, unable to communicate with each other or return to the Stargate. Prisoners of the local population, Sheppard and Teyla are taken as tribute to the planet's Wraith overlord, while McKay, Ronon, and Zelenka mount a rescue.

After the disappointing last Stargate Atlantis novel I read (Hunt & run) I was a bit wary about this book but I'm happy to annoounce that it's a very good and entertaining Stagate book. The characters are true to their TV selves. I'm glad that for a change Dr. Zalenka got to be the hero instead of the very annoying Rodney :)

Medusa - Clive Cussler

18-year-old Caleb Nye, a farm boy on his first sea voyage in 1848, finds himself a modern-day Jonah after being swallowed by a whale and then cut from the stomach, alive but forever changed. In the present, a Russian captain sees his Typhoon-class submarine sold to an unknown buyer, and in China, Dr. Song Lee, who's been banished to the countryside, gets orders to return to Beijing to fight a deadly SARS epidemic. Meanwhile, off Bermuda, Kurt Austin and the stalwart crew of the National Underwater and Marine Agency (NUMA) lower a bathysphere to the ocean depths, where something big snaps the cables connecting the vessel to the mother ship. Kurt Austin must stop a deadly virus from decimating the world in the latest NUMA Files novel. Research using a newly discovered jellyfish shows promising results, but before the tests even start, scientists studying these Blue Medusas start dying. As the pandemic threatens to spread through China, the NUMA team realizes that a Chinese triad is behind the outbreak.

By sheer conicidence I found myself reading to pandemic stories at the same time. The differnce between the 2 stories is that in this book the virus is made by a Chinese triad in order to topel the current chineese goverment and take control of China. The story is entertaining but I find the idea of Kurt Austin and his partner Joe Zavala taking down a 3 headed chineese triad all by themselves to be more then a bit over the top.

The stand: Captain Trips

On a secret army base in the Californian desert, something has gone horribly, terribly wrong. Something that will send Charlie Campion and his wife and daughter fleeing in the middle of the night. Unfortunately for the Campion family--and the rest of America--they are unaware that all three of them are carrying a deadly cargo: A virus that will spread from person to person like wildfire, triggering a massive wave of disease and death, prefacing humanity's last stand!

This is the 1st Stephen King book I read in any format. So far I am not disappointed. This graphic novel is the beginning of a classic pandemic threatening humanity story. The spreading virus is men made by the US goverment who try to cover their asses by dumping truckloads of bodies into the ocean. There is also a mysterious nomad whose connection to the pandemic story is still a mystery.

I'm looking forward to finding in the bargain bin the rest of the books in this serie. I wish that Marvel will release these books in TPB format too. $25 per book is too expensive.
