G.I. Joe vol.4

The ongoing story in the IDW continuity gets better and better. Now the Joes have to contend with Cobra using for deployment a "beam me up Scotty" transporter. Inspite of it, by sheer luck they manage to capture Cobra's dreadnaut submarine. The book ends with the sub's original crew trying to get it back.
In the Cobra front, Destro manage to take over the prisom and somehow ends up as Cobra commander. It's not exactly clear how it happend. The art is as usual very good. Looking forward to vol.5.

Doctor Who: The slitheen excrusion

As it's evident from this blog, I love Doctor Who in every format (except audio CD). This book is no exception. The doctor finds himslef a new companion for the adventure. This time it's a Classics student. Together they travel to 1500 BC and help humanity get rid of the Slitheen who yet again try to wipe them out.
The ancient Greeks accepting time travel and aliens as a commpn thing is a bit rediculous. But other then that it's a very good read. Can't wait for my London vacation and all the new Doctor Who books I'll get there :)

Nurder she wrote: Murder on the QE2

A very good detective novel although Jessica Fletcher's smugness is very annoying. Yes, she is a world know author, but a bit of humilty is good for the soul. The book is so good that I didn't guess who the murderer is. For some reason through out the book I was convinced that the murderer is Mary Ward who helped Jessica solve the murder. Although there is a big clue in the begining.

The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan

This is the 1st book in the Kane Chronicals series by Rick Riordan who is fast becoming one of my very favorite writers. The formula is similar to that of the Percy Jackson books or as it's more appropriate to call them now the Camp Halfblood books. Greek gods were replaced by their Egyptian counterparts and demigods by Egyptian wizards.
While the setting in the Camp Halfblood books is similar to the one in Harry Potter books: Camp Halfblood = Hogwarts, Chiron = Dumbledore etc., in the Kane books the setting is different. The House of Life which is supposed to be the Kanes safe house is like Hogwarts rulled by death eaters in the 7th book. Carter & Saddie has to fend for themselves with the help of Bast the cat godess and Koffu the baboon.
The book is wonderful. Couldn't put it down. Can't wait for book 2.

Trojan war

Reading this comics adaptation right after reading the Lost Hero was a big mistake. After the demigods adventures the Trojan War seems pale in comparisson. The art is great. I'll try to read it again later.

The lost hero by Rick Riordan

This is the 1st book in the Heroes of Olympus series - the sequel to the Percy Jackson books. I don't care that these books are classfied as a childrens or young adults book. I enjoyed every minute of reading it. New demigods alongside the old characters battle against the Gaea who wants to annihilate the Gods and rule the world again. To do that she is using nasty Giants and crazy characters from Greek mythology like Medea or king Midas. We are also introduced to the existense of second Haldblood camp, this one for Roman demigods. For some unexplained so far reason, the 2 camps are enemies but they must reunite in order to fight Gaea alonside their godly parents.
This book belongs to the elite WOW category. Can't wait for book 2 " The son of Posedon" which is still in the qiting process. Also started reading the Red Pyramid - the 1st book in the Kane Chronicles series by Riordan, and so far it's bery enjoyable too.

Blood ties: Bolld pact

Although in the too short lived TV show Vicky was human, this book end with her being changed by Henry into a vampire and Henry moving from Toronto to Vancouver. It all happened because of Vicky's mother unscrupoulus boss who decided to use Mrs. Nelson as a test subject in her Frankensteinian expirement. Very enjoyable read. Too bad that Tanya Huff ended the series after book 5 :(

Stargate: Daniel Jackson

Although it's a classic Stargate story, it was a bit disappointing. Daniel was on the only SG-1 member in the story, with only very short mention of Mitchel and the annoying Vala. My beloved Jack O'neill was absent and the same goes for Carter and Teal'c. Part of the art was also wrong. The Jafa were drawn with no symoble on their forheads.

G.I.Joe vol.3

The fight between the Joes and Cobra continues. The later manage to kiddnep a scientist under the Joes nose and he helps them perfect the Star Trek trasporter system. Destro stinn in his containment suit is banished to a Cobra prison in a former soviet gulag, and Snake Eye heals under is old master's supervision. Great story & art. This month Vol.4 is going to be realsed and next month I'm going to start buying and reading the G.I. Joe: Cobra series.

Fatal Voyage by Kathy Reichs

I love the Bones TV show. The stories are very interesting and so are the characters. So I was very excited when I found out that it's based on the books written by Kathy Reichs and rushed to the used books shop to see if they have any.

Well, the only thing common between the books and the show is Dr. Temperance Brennan. And even she is not the same character as in the show. The books Brennan has "human skills". She is married but seperated and have a grown up daughter. The other characters from the show are not there and the same goes for the Jeffersonian where the show's lab is.

At the beginning the book is a bit boring. Nothing inetersting in Brennan identifying victims from a plane crash. There was also too much scientific jargon. But then Brennan was bannished from the crash site and things started to be very interesting. Till almost the end I didn't guess that the inn keepper is the bad guy and that it's all about a sect of cannibals.

New book

Sunday, November 28, 2010

The 9th book of the Harry Dresden saga is is great as the previous 8. Harry find him in the middle of power struggle in the vampires White court. With the help of his brother Thomas (a white court vampire), Srg. Murphy and crime boss Marcone Harry manage to kill the heads of 2 of the White court houses. At the end he descovers that Thomas owns a beauty salon and world as a hairdresser feeding and earning money at the same time. he laso finds out that his buddy Warden Ramirez also suspect that there is a Black council of wizards working behind the scenes.

Code name Cassandra by Meg Cabot

The 2nd book in the 1-800-where-r-you series is cute. It's summer and Jess is working as a consuler in a music camp. The FBi are still watching her inspite her claim that she lot her ability to find missing kids. Whe Jess is approached by a father is a missing kid she helps him with her boyfriend Rob help. she reveals that she is still in the missing kids buisness.

Star Wars: Crimson empire

It's been a very long time since the last time I read Star Wars comics and I enjoyed reading again comics from that universe.

This book is the last chapter of the Dark Empire saga and of Emperor Palpatine story after the last movie. The usual heros (Like, Lia or Han) are not there but the story is very enjoyable. The art is great.

Doctor Who: The only good dalek

This the 1st Doctor Who graphic novel from BBC books. I was aware of it till it landed on my local comics shop shelf. This is also the 1st 11th Doctor graphic novel. The story is great. A scientis succeed in gentically turning a Dalek into a good Dalek. The Daleks are are intent to extarminate this good Dalek which they see as an abomination. The art is also great. Crossing fingers for more Doctor Who graphic novels from BBc books :)

Doctor Who: annual 2010 + #13-16

The annual includes 4 stories. 2 were cute, 1 I didn't understand at all and the 4th was continuation of the story from the regular issues.
Issues 13-16 are the last arc in the story. In the end we learn that the doctor's companion who dies and somehow becamea 5th dimenssion being, in the one behind everything that happend it can be created. A very good Doctor Who story.

Night world vol.1 by LJ Smith

This volume includes 3 books: Secret vampire, Daughters of darkness & Spell binder.
I love LJ Smith writing. It's easy and fun to read. The idea in Night World is the same as in The Vampire Diaries. Vampires, Werewolfs (hello Prof. Lupin), witches and other magical people are leaving among us humans, look at us a vermin and food, all that without our knowledge. In all 3 books teenage magical people fall in love with human teenagers, discover that humans are people after all and start to live not according to the harsh rules of the "night world". The stories are cute. I have only 2 remarks:
1. I wish there were more stories about each couple telling what happened to them after they got together.
2. Note to self: don't read more then 1 book at a time or they astart looking the same.
Other that I'm looking forward to getting the next 2 volumes.

Wexford: The monster in the box

Boring !!! I love Brit detective stories but this book is boring. in the 1st half Wexford tells Burdon his suspicions since he was a rookie that Eric Targo murdered 2 people, and remembers his early love life. The 1st new body appears only in the 2nd half and there is no mystery who the murderer is. All this is mingled with the life of Muslims in the UK. So not interesting. The most annoying thing is that Jewish cop Hanna who goes out of her way to be pro-Muslim, as if the same muslims don't see her as an infedil and want her dead because she is Jewish. GRRRRRR

Smallville: Dragon

I like the Superman story very much but don't read the comics because they are endless and interconnected with other comic characters. I'm reading enough different comics titles as it is. The Smallville serie is great and so are the books. In this book Clark is still in highschool secretly pinning over Lana. Drinking mint tea laced with kriptonite dust fullfil his wish to be with Lana, but makes him forget who he realy is and loose his alien powers. Luckily he regains his memory in the 90th minute and isa ble to save Lana from an ex-con turned into a lizard man by the same water that affected Clark.

When lightening strike by Meg Cabot

This is the 1st book in the 1-800-WHERE-R-YOU series telling the adventures of Jess Mastriani from the moment she was strike by a lightening and started dreaming about the where abouts of missing people. In the TV show 1-800-missing that was based on characters from the book, Jess already graduated from hughschool and joined the FBI. In the book she is still in highschool and being an FBI agent is the last thing on her mind. A very enjoyable read.

The vampire Diaries: The struggle

The Vampire Diaries books are very different from the TV show. Elena, Stefan, Damon, Bonie, Caroline & Alaric are in both but the stories are totaly different. The Struggle is the 2nd book in the series. It ends with Elena being turned into a vampire. The TV show is going in a different direction. At least the part of the 1st season I watched so far. I enjoy both very much.

Doctor Who: Ghosts of India

Donna wanted to eat Indian food so my beloved 10th Doctor took her to Calcutta. As usual he got the time wrong and they find theselves in the last weeks of Britain's rule of India. They meet some pompous Brits, Ghandi and 2 aliens. 1 good and the other is the bad guy in the story. I love the Doctor Who books !!!

G.I. Joe: The rise of Cobra - movie adaptation

I haven't seen the movie and was disappointed. The art isn't good, esp. when compared to the art in the ongoing series. Also sometimes the connection between panels wasn't clear enough. The story is about how Duke & Ripcord joined the Joes.

Dracula

The day after I returned from a trip to Romania I foundthis comics adaptation if Bram Stoker's book in the bargains bin. Talk about coinsidence :) Any how I enjoyed it a lot although the written diaries part was a bit archaic and hard to read because the colors they used were not distinctive enough. Otherwise the art was good.

Stargate SG-1: Four Dragons

Haleluya !!! At last a true SG-1 book after several a bit disappointing books. It ake place soon after Daniel's return from his accenssion. He gers captured by Lord Yu and the rest of SG-1 with the help of Master Bra'tac and Jacob Carter/Selmak go to the rescue. The end is very surprising when SG-1 discovered that the whole oredeal was Lord Yu's way of testing SG-1 and esp. Jack O'neill to see if they are capable of protecting Earth againsy Anubis. Loed Yu's conceren for Earth's well ebing is very surprising.

There is going to be a sequel to this book called Stargate SG-1: The drift which will take place in Antartica according to the auther. WOOHOO !!!

Spartan gold by clive cussler

Clive Cussler with help of others so far published over 30 books. I already read most of them. It started wih Dirk Pitt adventures. The Kurt Austin and the Oregon adventures were later added to the list. All these books are connected to the oceans and Numa. This book is the 1st in the Fargo adventures. New heroes who are treasure hunters and have no connection (so far) to Numa. The formula is the same: bit's of history mixed with riddles and twists and at the end our heroes descover another rare peace of history. This time it's 2 gold columns from Delphi.
While Dan Brown's 3rd Langdon book using the same formula was boring and idiotic, Cussler manage to keep all his books (so far) interesting and refreshing. I'm looking forward to reading more Faego adventures.

Supernatural: Beginning's end

The TV show started with Sam as a tudent in Sanford and John Winchester being missing for a long time. This book is the 3rd part of the TV show's prequel. In the 1st 2 part Sam & Dean were kids. Here they are already near their age in the serie. Dean is 20 something and Sam is 18. The book tells what happened right after Sam's graduation from highschool and how her ended up in Stanford while his dad went missing. Very interesting read. Another book telling what happend with Dean in time between the end of the book and the start of the TV show could be very interesting too. Unfortunatly DC decided to shut down Wildstorm, so I don't see any more Supernatural comics in the future :(

Doctor Who news from IDW

IDW announced a new ongoing DOCTOR WHO comic book series, which will now feature all-new adventures of Matt Smith, the Eleventh Doctor. This January 2011, IDW Publishing launches DOCTOR WHO #1, kicking off an all-new ongoing comic book series.Penned by writer, Tony Lee, DOCTOR WHO #1 finds the Doctor and his new companions, Amy Pond and Rory Williams, battling holographic spam and 'friending' requests on a planet that's hours from destruction by an alien race. IDW's new ongoing comic book series promises not to dial down the excitement, offering holographic spam fighting Mad Max-esque mercenaries, Victorian Jack The Ripper suspense, penalty shoot-outs against Vikings and Cybernetic Space Pirate Dinosaurs among the many adventures that the Eleventh Doctor will be having. Said IDW's DOCTOR WHO editor Denton J. Tipton, "There's going to be something for everyone in this story. For example, fans of the classic series should be on the look out for a classic DOCTOR WHO villain!""I could tell you who they are, but I'd have to kill you," adds Lee. "Let's just say we've been given special dispensation to use them, and we have a killer story - in all senses of the word!"

CSI NY: Blood on the sun

2 murder mysteries for the price of one. In the murder of the family I guessed quite early that the father started to rape his daughter and then killed her and his wife. In the 2nd murder, that Bloom guy was a the main suspect from the beginning because of the bloodwood connection. But till the end I didn't guess that he was a CIA hitman under disguise.

Stargate SG-1: The power behind the throne

I love Stargate SG-1 in whatever format I watch or read their adventures. But I've mixed feelings about this book. The author took the easy way out and just copied descriptions of what happened in the consentration camps during the Hololocost changing only the names of the players: Nazies = Corvanie, Jews = Kelani and Hitler = Corvus Keen. I read Stargate for entertainment, not to be reminded of the Holocost !!!
Also SG-1 was not portrayed as their usual selves. They were subdued too easily, esp. O'neill. The end is also baffeling. We don't know if SG-1 arrived safely to the SGC including Jack who was detained by the Goa'uld Iblis after the rest of the team entered the wormhole. And so far there is no hint to a sequel.

Under world by Reginald Hill

Another great Daziel & Pascoe book. This time DI Peter Pascoe has the leading role, and at the end he is promoted to DCI. The book is so good that till the last pages I didn't guess who the real murderer is. The only thing I was sure of was that Billy Farr and his dog Jacko were murdered, but not why. I thought that Billy was excuted by the miners because they believed that he murdered the little girl. I was wrong.

The only part of the book I didn't like was the way Ellie Pascoe behaved around the young stad Colin Farr. Peter deserve much better from his wife.

G.I. Joe: Operation hiss

Don't know what is it with the G.I. Joe comics but so far I wasn't disappointed from any of the books I read. This book, which belongs to the movie continuity doesn't disappoint either.
This time Duke goes undercover and infiltrate Major Bludd's organization. He even goes as far as shooting Ripcord knowing that Ripcord won't be harmed due to his Joe body armor. The Joes are shown to be vulnerable when again Cobra manage to get a computer virus into their system. Maybe the Joes need to change their computer geeks. At the end, the Joes manage to stop Cobra from detonating bombs all over the world, except for the Golden Bridge in San Francisco.
Great read and the art is wonderful.

Star Trek: Captain's blood

This is one of the books that were "written" by William Shatner. Yea right. Since the real authors were the Reeves-Stevens, it's very interesting and fun to read. The book is set after the events in the movie Nemesis, and involve characters from TOS, TNG and the movie.

Star Trek Enterprise: By the book

Boring !!! Another book that I wasn't able to read from cover to cover and 105 pages only skimmed through the rest. Archer's Enterprise encounter a planet with 2 different sentient species, living alone on different continents. The impatient Archer blunders through 1st contact with each specie. The ridiculous part is that the advanced Hipons who colonized the planet 2000 years ago need the primitive Enterprise's help to realise that their psionic communication is what killing the native humanoids. Half of the book is a boring step by step description of a RPG game played by some of the crew.

CSI: Sin city

Reading the CSI books is like watching an episode. The team investigate 2 murders of women: a stripper and a born again christian. As usual after some wring turns the team finds the real killers. Fun reading.

Star Trek: movie adaptation

As an adaptation this book is very good. Reading it was like watching the movie again. The art is pretty good too. But I have a huge problem with all this Star Trek reboot. I understand that this is a different time line from TOS's time line so things are different. But for example the idea of Kirk being promoted from Cadet straight to Captain is ridiculous. Also seeing a very emotional Spock having relationship with Uhura is very weird.

Star Trek Voyager: Backflash

This book is from the delta quadrant era and I got it just because it involved Captain Sulu. The book is OK, but not much more.

Stargate Atlantis: Hunt and run

The book isn't worth the cover price was S&H that I paid for it. Me thinks that in the future I'll get from Amazon on the SG-1 books and leave getting the Atlantis books for my next visit to the Forbidden Planet.

Torchwood: Slow decay

I thinks that I broke my own record reading this book. I finished it in less then 24 hours. It was so enticing that I wasn't able to put it down. That is although quite early I deduced that the loosing weight clinic is the bad guys.

So far only 15 Torchwood books were released between 2007 and 2009. So far I own read about half of them. It will be a sad day when I'll finish the 15th book. Although since the show is supposed to be picked by Starz who promised a new season in 2011, there is a chance for more novels.

Smoke and Morrors by Tanya Huff

The 2nd books in the Smoke series is as exiting as the 1st. The main hero is Tony Foster the fledgling wizard. Henry Fitzroy has a very minor role. Tony and his crew mates are shooting an episode of their vampire TV show in an old house that turns to be a real haunted house. When night comes, the house lock them in and tried to get them to kill each other. Unfortunately to the evil residing int the house, one of it's captive is Tony who had to reveal his secret to the others in order to be able to save most of them. Too bad the Huff only wrote 3 books in this series. They are wonderful and I wish there were more.

Robocop #1-6

Issues #1-4 are a 4 parts story about a private company taking over old Detroit's police department, replacing the flash & blood policemen with huge robots and forcing Robocop to work with them. There is also a secondary story about that company's creator trying to take over Robocop's body. I liked that story a lot.
The next 2 issues are 2 stand alone stories continuing the main story. They are not as good as the 1st story. At the end of issue #6 Dynamite promise that the story will continue. So far no hint to that in the solicitations or in the comics news. The art is pretty good.

The lost symbol

Since I liked the 2 previous Robert Langdon books, I was looking forward to reading this book. At the beginning it was as interesting as the previous book. But as the book progressed it became evident that it's just a copy of the same formula with no new twists. Somewhere in the middle I knew that the bad guy is Peter Solomon's son, which finished for me the mystery part. What was left to find was whether Langdon will save his friend Peter. As the end approached it became more stupid. There is no way that the Freemasons will let Dan Brown publish their inner secrets. And at end, the way seriously injured Peter was running around DC was plain ridiculous. When I finished reading, I was glad that I bought it as a 2nd hand book and didn't pay the full cover price.

G.I. Joe ongoing vol. 2

WOW !!! The 2nd volume of the ongoing series which collects issues #7-12 is as great as the 1st one. General Hawk had to eat his hat and admit that Cobra is a real threat and that Scarlet isn't a traitor. Snake Eyes find his match and almost get himself killed. And Destro is still trying to invent the matter transporter. Thanks god that Scotty isn't around to help him and Cobra.
The difference between the new IDW continuity and the old comics is that while in the old comics the JOEs were founded as an answer to Cobra's threat, in the new comics the JOEs were founded long before anyone was aware of Cobra. But who cares. I love reading both continuities.
The story is very exiting and full of action. The art is just wonderful !!! Looking forward to vol. 3 which I'm planning to buy only in October in accordance with my 1 TPB per month resolution. Next month's TPB will be Operation Hiss from the movie continuity.

Star Trek Voyager: The farther shore

This is the sequel of Homecoming. Voyager's senior stuff with the help of Data, Dr. Kaz and Harry Kim's girlfriend manage to stop Admiral Covington who made herself into a Borg queen, to assimilate Earth. The irony is that during the Destiny books, Janeway herself will be assimilated and turned into a Borg queen. I'm glad that I've decided to start reading the Voyager books from after the TV series.

Is Angel comics going back to Dark Horse ???

An announcement in Dark Horse's Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Riley one-shot has fans wondering, and worrying, about the future of IDW Publishing's Angel series. In a column at the end of the issue, in stores today, Dark Horse Senior Managing Editor Scott Allie teased "the return of the Angel series to Dark Horse in late 2011, in tandem with our Buffy Season 9 relaunch".

Chris Ryall, posted on IDW's forum earlier today, telling concerned Angel readers that, "We'll be addressing this soon, so please bear with us. Thanks, for your patience and your support."

Update: Both IDW & Dark Horse confirmed that Angel comics are moving back to Dark Horse. I'm not that thrilled by the move. On one hand the issues will probably be less expensive and maybe there will be less monsters. But on the other hand, DH's paper quality is not great and they tend to stick full page ads om every other page :(

Star Trek Voyager: Homecoming

I've finally realized why suddenly reading Star Trek novels is problematic for me. In the past each novel was a stand alone. You can pick up any book and read it without feeling that you are missing crucial background. But in the last several years, all the books are part of an evolving universe that started to evolve from where it was left by the 10th movie (Nemesis) and the end of the Voyager series. So the only way to read them is in order of appearance. I'm going to make a list which will enable me to read then in the correct order.
This book is about the 1st adventure of the Voyager's crew starting with their returning home from the Delta quadrant. They have the misfortune of coming home right after the Dominion war and find themselves being accused of plugging Earth with a Borg virus that turn humans into Borg drones. Near the end of the book I've figured out that the head of Starfleet's cover ops is behind that virus. This is the 1st of 2 books, with The Farther Shore being the sequel. Luckily I've it too and already started reading it.

Dresden files: Proven guilty

The 8th Dresden files book is as wonderful as the previous 7 books. Jim Butcher manage to keep the suspense and interest going. When Mouse growled at Molly Carpenter I was sure that she is the one doing black magic. The book ends with a cliff hanger - which one of the senior White consulars is the traitor helping the Red court vampires.
I've just checked Jim Butcher's web page and found out that the 13th Harry Dresden book - Ghost Story, is due out March 29th, 2011. Also, Side Jobs, a compilation of Dresden Files short stories is slated for October 26th. I'm a very happy Harry Dresden fan :)

IDW for November 2010

  2. ANGEL ILLYRIA #1
  3. GI JOE FUTURE NOIR SP #1
  4. SPIKE #2
  5. STAR TREK KHAN RULING IN HELL #2

8 items so far solicited for November 2010. Actually there are 2 more G.I. Joe TPs but I'm not listing them here because the Cobra vol.2 I'm going to buy after I'll read vol.1. And for Hearts & Minds TP they are asking for $25 for a 5 issues TP, so I've already ordered the issues themselves.

G.I. Joe: Snake eyes

This graphic novel is categorized as a G.I. Joe movie related book. I haven't seen the movie and still didn't read the comic adaptation of it. But all the above didn't matter when it comes to enjoying this book. The story is a glimpse into Snake eyes background and history as a western boy raised in Japan. A very good read. I'm very happy that I've decided to add G.I. Joe to my reading list :)

CSI Miami: Heat wave

A very suspenseful book. Somewhere in the middle I started suspecting that the one behind the gangs war and murders was the DEA whose wife was one of the victims who turned vigilantly. I never suspected that it was him and his ex-partner turned drug lords. I need to get my hands on more CSI books. Too bad that they are impossible to find in my neck of the woods. Thanks god for Amazon.

GI Joe: Helix

Got this oneshot only today and already read it. The story is good but way too short. Duke was sent to find a missing Joe operative - Helix. On the next page he already stumble upon someone who point him to the hotel where Helix was staying with the Cobra Japanese bad guy she was sent to spy on. 2 pages later Duke and Helix save the Tokyo stock exchange from a bomb and capture said Cobra operative. End of story. As I said, way tooo short. The art isn't as good as in vol. 1 of the ongoing series.

New comics

  1. Doctor Who classics S3 #6
  2. G.I. Joe: Helix
  3. G.I. Joe: Snake eyes
