Dalziel & PascoeL Ruling passion

It's been a very long time since I read a good English detective novel. Lately all my reading, as this blog will attest to, consist of sci-fi & vampires books. I missed reading about British cops and their murder mysteries.
In this book Ellie propose to Pascoe after they find that 4 of their collage friends were murdered. Pascoe get promoted to Inspector. I didn't guess till the end who the murderer is and the motive is beyond comprehension. Murdering 4 innocent people just because one of then was going to tell the world that the murderer is un-employed and not a big wig in a big company as he pretended ???

Star Trek Voy: Spirit walk b.1 - old wounds

*big sigh of relief* After 3 failed attempts to read Star Trek novel, I finally managed to read one from cover to cover.

I don't like the early Voyager books about their adventures in the delta quadrant, but the books from after their return to the alpha quadrant are fine.

This book tells Chakotay's 1st adventure as the Voyagers new captain after Janway was promoted to admiral. The books ends with a cliff hanger as Chakotay and his sister were captured by a mad Cardassian scientist and a shape shifter from the gamma quadrant. Although I know that at the end Chakotay will return to Voyager because he captained her later during the Destiny books, I;m still in suspense to see how it will end. There is lots of Indian folklore which doesn't mean much to me.

G.I. Joe: a real american hero #155.5

I,m so hooked on G.I. Joe comics that I was very happy when I discovered this issue in the bag from last free comic book day. From reading it I gathered that the new IDW run of the comics started a new continuity that is not following the old Marvel run.
This issue continue the story of the old Marvel run and is written by the same writer - Larry Hama. Although I never read the 1st 155 issues, I enjoyed reading this issue and am looking forward to the 1st volume that will start with issue #156 that was released this week.
I can't explain exactly why I like this comics so much. Maybe it because it's good to read about the rest of the western world having to fight the bad guys instead of us, even if in the comics the bad guys are called Cobra instead of Hamas , Al Quaida or Iran etc. :)

Star Trek comics news from IDW

IDW's next Trek miniseries is, Khan: Ruling in Hell, a four part series depicting the exile of Khan and his augments on Ceti Alpha V. The series will start in October and will be written by the Tipton Brothers.

I hope that it will be less boring then the 2 Khan novels.

Flash Gordon comics news

According to CBR, Ardden Entertainment is announced a new artist for the next three FLASH GORDON story arcs. The 1st of those arcs will be FLASH GORDON: INVASION OF THE RED SWORD and will chronicle the events directly after Ardden Entertainment’s critically-acclaimed mini-series FLASH GORDON: THE MERCY WARS (called “good, old-fashioned fun, freshly polished” by Publishers Weekly) and the star-studded anthology FLASH GORDON: THE SECRET HISTORY OF MONGO. After the apparent demise of Ming the “Merciful,” Flash Gordon, Dale Arden and Dr. Hans Zarkov continue their attempts to return to Earth. Meanwhile, Prince Barin, King Thun and Prince Vultan are hard at work trying to create a peaceful new environment on Mongo. However, when a mysterious group of Earth soldiers violently invade the planet, our heroes are separated and must band together once again to save the lives of every race on Mongo.

I'm confused because 2 months ago Dynamite announced that they acquired the rights for the Flash Gordon comics. Weird !!!

GI Joe ongoing vol. 1

WOW !!! While reading the old GI Joe: Reborn got me interested in the idea, this book got me hooked !!!
This book collects issues #0-6 of the ongoing series. The art is wonderful. Even the night scenes are bright and very defined. The story so far is also great although the 1st 2 issues are a bit confusing because they describe several seemingly un-related incidents. Later we see that they are very much related with that Greek fellow, Destro and Cobra connecting the dots. The arc ends with Destro having to wear a body armor indefinitely or he'll evaporate, and general Hawk arresting Scarlet for her dealing with the rouge joe Snakeyes.

The Terminator 2029

This is the 1st arc of what is supposed to be a prequel to the 1st Terminator movie. In the middle of the 2nd issue all I could say about this arc was that it's describing life in the U.S.A after the Skynet wiped out most of human. It's a good description but nothing impressive or interesting. The last page started to sparkle some interest with the appearance of a very old Kyle Rees. Issue 3 is more interesting. Ben was persuaded to go back in time to 1984 to keep Kyle from being captured and inadvertently revealing something that will lead to the creation of Skynet. I guess that the naked T-800 that appeared towards the end and killed Paige is the one played by Schwarzenegger and that it was captured by John Connor and reprogrammed to save Sara Connor in the 1st movie. The art is good.

Dark Horse for October 2010

Smoke and shadows

I love the Henry Fitzroy books. too bad that are only 8 :( The 1st 5 books are about the vampire Henry and the ex-cop turned PI turned vampire Vicky Nelson, This book is the 1st in the Smoke trilogy. No Vicky or her ex-partner current boyfriend Michael Celuci. Instead the heroes are Henry, his ex-boyfriend / blood source Tony Foster and Arra the wizard. Very interesting reading. Loved every minute. The tale is smacked of dear old Voldemort and the trio Tony - Henry - Arra sounds a lot like the trio Harry - Ron - Hermione.

Stargate Atlantis: Dead end

Finally after a long wait, a new Stargate book was published and made me a very happy Stargate fan. The story is not special and reads like an episode, which is OK by me. The characters are true to their onscreen counterparts. It's very annoying when a writer who writes TV tie-in books, doesn't bother to watch the series and gets things wrong. Like in 1 of the SG-1 books (don't remember which) Jack keeps calling and referring to Daniel as "Jackson" while onscreen he always refer to him as Daniel.

The vampire diaries: The awakening

While I can't stand the writing in the True Blood books, and have found the Twilight 1 st book and movie quite boring, I was pleasantly surprised by the 1st book in the Vampire Diaries series and found it quite fascinating.

The story is basically the same as in the Twilight books. A mortal teenager gets involved with a nice Vampire and finds herself entangled in his dark world. This book was 1st published 14 years before Twilight, which makes it the original and Twilight the copy.

The story and atmosphere are great and I loved the back flashes to 15 century Italy. Hopefully I'll get the 2nd book soon.
