This book is totally different from all the other Cussler books. Usually a Cussler book start with an historic event and moves to the near future where the heros (Dirk Pitt, Kurt Austin, the Fargos or the Oregon crew) find relics from that event and on the way save the world from yet another meglomaniac trying to re-shape it.This books start is the 1950s when a locomotive and boxcar are found in a lake. Then it moves to 1906 and the story of detective Isaac Bell from the Van Dorn detective agency chasing after the bank robber known as the Butcher Bundit. A very interesting read. Looking forward to other Isaac Bell books.
